So that’s why we can’t just look on a lab test and say, Oh, your estrogen level was this, or your progesterone level was that.
In general, the normal range for total testosterone in women is about 15 to 70 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL). However, it is important to note that this range can vary depending on the laboratory that performs the test. Each lab may have slightly different reference ranges, so it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider to interpret test results accurately. Despite the initial rise in testosterone, our study highlights that hormone levels do not remain elevated long-term and may experience a rebound effect, dropping below pre-exercise values within 24 h. Kvorning et al.61 emphasized that individual differences in hormonal regulation and exercise volume influence the magnitude of post-exercise testosterone responses. This aligns with findings by Kraemer et al.60, who demonstrated that total workout volume significantly impacts post-exercise testosterone levels. To ensure the diversity of our study population, we enrolled females of various ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, and professions.

In addition to a decrease in muscle mass, women with low testosterone levels may also experience weight gain. Testosterone plays a role in regulating metabolism, so when levels are low, women may find it more difficult to maintain a healthy weight.
Body fat causes reduction of testosterone and increases estrogen levels. Doctors may also suggest hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), expecting this treatment to produce the same effects in women as it does in men. However, medical researchers are still studying the impact of testosterone administration in women’s bodies.
This test typically measures total testosterone levels, but it may also evaluate levels of free testosterone or other related hormones. Adequate testosterone levels are essential for optimizing physical performance and muscle strength, regardless of sex12. Testosterone is pivotal in protein synthesis, facilitating muscle growth and repair processes. Moreover, it enhances muscle mass and strength by stimulating the proliferation of satellite cells and promoting muscle fiber hypertrophy. Consequently, individuals with optimal testosterone levels often exhibit greater muscle mass, increased muscle strength, and improved athletic performance. Furthermore, testosterone influences energy metabolism, favoring fats as an energy source during exercise, and enhancing endurance and stamina.
This is in accordance with reports from other autoimmune diseases, including SLE, MS, and RA, in which lower serum levels of testosterone have previously been reported (18, 19). Furthermore, testosterone serum levels negatively correlated with concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines IFN-γ and TNF, which are related to T cell activation (Figure 1). There was no correlation between serum testosterone levels and liver stiffness, age, or BMI, suggesting that the observed immune phenotypes are unlikely to be confounded by these variables.
Symptoms of high estrogen include having irregular periods and dense breast tissue. Some supplements, like DHEA, could help support estrogen production, but check with your doctor before starting any.
